How to Install Win98 on a Flash Drive

Posted by Brothson Allotey

You can install Windows 98 on a USB (Universal Serial Bus) flash drive, but it should be compatible with the operating system. Unfortunately, Win98 is not capable of detecting flash drives without the right type of drivers. If the USB flash drive is not equipped with software that will install the drivers for Win98, you may need to browse the Internet for the manufacturer's website to see if they offer drivers that you can download.

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows 98 installation CD
  • USB flash drive
  • CD-ROM drive
  • Computer with Internet connection

Instructions

  • 1
Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your computer. Log onto the Internet and download the driver for the USB flash drive and Win98.

  • 2
Restart your computer. Windows will automatically detect that you have installed new hardware on your computer. You should see a message that says, "New USB storage device has been detected" on your computer.

  • 3
Open "My Computer" and locate the new drive. Windows usually assigns the letter "E:" to the flash drive and shows it as a "Removable Disk." Click on the drive letter to open the popup window. You can begin copying files from the Win98 installation CD to the USB flash drive.

  • 4
Insert the Win98 installation CD into your CD-ROM drive and copy all the files on it to the USB flash drive, then restart your computer.

  • 5
Change the boot sequence settings in BIOS (Basic Input Output System), so that your computer will boot from the USB flash drive. Press the "F10" key or the "Delete" key to enter the BIOS. Refer to your motherboard manual or the manufacturer of your computer to find out the correct key to press to enter the BIOS.

  • 6
Adjust the BIOS settings and change the boot sequence. Follow the BIOS instructions to use the appropriate keys that will allow you to change the settings. Make sure that the USB flash drive is listed to boot first. Save your settings and exit BIOS.

  • 7
Restart your computer. Follow Win98 instructions for installing the operating system. Select the option to begin Win98 setup installation.

  • 8
Press the "Continue" button to enable the Wizard to start. Follow Win98 instructions to help guide you through the setup process. It will take a few moments for the installation to complete. Restart your computer again and enter what Win98 prompts you to enter.
